An Unofficial Officials Clinic!

Looking to get ready for no minors?

Houston Roller Derby is hosting an unofficial Officials Clinic on Saturday November 17 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. It will be a full day of skating, the mechanics of officiating a bout —everything from staffing, to team work, to outside pack referee positioning, and an introduction to the No Minors rule set!

What could be better? 2 hours scrimmaging!
Cost for six hours of instruction and officiating at one or both scrimmages is $40 for Refs and NSOs.

Are you a Skater, hoping to get in on that scrimmage action? Newer to the game or interested in getting in some extra track time? Love mashing up and helping Refs and NSOs stay on top of their game?
We’re looking for you! We’ll have two scrimmages open to the first 28 skaters who sign up. You must bring a Black and a White jersey with your number (4 inches) on the back. But wait! There’s more!
And it’s the best part – The scrimmages will be run with the NEW no minors rule set. Derby is evolving and you better be ready to evolve with it. You must also attend the “Deep Dive Into No-Minors” session at HIS at 12:30 p.m.

Meet HRD Mondays!

It's Monday! That means it's the time of the week for YOU to meet the many faces of HRD and learn a little about the skaters you want to cheer for in 2012!

This Monday, check out Misfits and Blown Apart!

Name Misfits
Number 3.14
Team The Brawlers
Position Hopeful jammer/blocker
Years Played Two years on rec league, this is my rookie season with The Brawlers.
Height My driver's license says 5'7"
Occupation Nursing tech
How did you get into derby? Some friends told me that they could totally see me doing something like derby, but I was too chicken to join by myself so I showed up to rec league with my sister-in-law and loved it ever since.
How did you pick your derby name? I didn't choose my name, Rushin Cleavage (rec league trainer) did. In rec, everyone was supposed to have their names on their shirts or helmets, but I didn't. I just wore a misfits shirt to like every practice because i wanted to look tough. and during training exercises and pack work drills, Rush just yelled out "MISFITS!" and I knew he was talking to me. So now my name is Misfits and I couldn't get rid of it even if I wanted to.
Likes I really like weirding people out.
Dislikes I really don't like when people chew gum all loud and talk while doing so. It’s like nails on a chalkboard.
Favorite thing about derby The people and the game. Constantly learning new things and improving on skills and working as a team. It’s an incredible community.
Fun Facts The only bone I’ve ever really broken in my entire body was my maxilla in my face. I broke my face bone in a mosh pit.

Name Blown Apart
Number 1769
Team Fresh Meat Skater (soon to be drafted)
Position Blocker/Pivot/Jammer (haven't established a specific position yet!)
Years Played I started in HRD's recreational league in September 2011 and I made fresh meat in April 2012.
Height 5'1"
Occupation Psychology student at the University of Houston
How did you get into derby? About six years ago, I was surfing the net for interesting things to do in Houston. I stumbled onto the HRD website and was fascinated. I had never heard of roller derby before and since I liked skating so much, I decided that I'd wait until I was old enough to take the dive.
How did you pick your derby name? When I was a sophomore in high school, I became really interested in the Napoleon Bonaparte and the Napoleonic Wars. We played a trivia game in my history class one day and I decided to name my team "Bonaparte." A girl on the other team taunted, "you're gonna get blown apart, Bonaparte!" It stuck. That, and Sideshow Bob makes a similar joke in an old Simpsons episode where he tries to blow up Krusty.
Likes Ancient history, Pepsi, fountain pens, recycling, Hawaiian pizza, hamsters, postcards, nature, miniatures, multiples of five.
Dislikes Litter bugs, jaywalkers, bad drivers, slow walkers, tomato paste.
Favorite thing about derby If I had to choose only one thing, it would be how tight-knit it is and how supportive the skaters are. No lie, I have made more amazing friends through derby in seven months than I have at college in two years. My personal derby motto is, "why join a sorority when you can join a roller derby league?"
Fun Facts I spent two months in a psychiatric ward when I was a senior in high school...as a student observer of course! I'm trilingual (English, Spanish, Greek). My family gave me a donkey for my 16th birthday and I named him Andrew Jackson.

Tune in next Monday to see our next set of featured skaters for the week!

Meet HRD Mondays!

It's Monday! That means it's the time of the week for YOU to meet the many faces of HRD and learn a little about the skaters you want to cheer for in 2012!

This Monday, check out Beverly Kills and Sweet D-manda !

Name Beverly Kills
Number #90210
Team The Houston Roller Derby All-Stars
Position Jammer, blocker, team choreographer
Years Played I have successfully made it through 5 HRD seasons
Height 5' 6"
Occupation Bartender, trainer, entertainer
How did you get into derby? Carmen Geddit and I had heard about derby and thought it was such a cool idea. Somehow, Carmen found out about a practice that was taking place to organize a Houston league, so me, Carmen, and Chewcifer went to out first practice and the rest, as they say, is history.
Likes Positivity, randomness, drums, candy, theatre, music, art, black-ink pens, dogs, parkour, handstands, dancing, cackling, metaphysics, pterodactyl screeching, skating instead of driving, and derby love!
Dislikes Mayo....gross. Cats with a grudge, hangnails, pretension, close-mindedness, and not being sponsored to skate by a millionaire that owns a company making adorable stuff animal puppies!
Favorite thing about derby I believe in being a part of a movement that motivates women to feel good about themselves and create a sisterhood that's based on healthy competition to foster a good example for future derby generations to come! So...on that note, I guess you could say that I really, really like being a part of the message that derby promotes and continues to support!
Fun Facts I was in the circus once.....swam with whales, have been unexpectedly caught in a demonstration in Paris, have a attended a mass lead by the Pope (when in Rome!), got to climb the Mayan ruins and swim in a cenote- before they banned access to the public, and I got the chance, one Halloween, to play the theremin!

Name Sweet D-manda aka dirt bebe -or- D-
Number 9/10
Team The Valkyries
Position Blocker (eventually transforming into a step-crazy jammer)
Years Played 2 years (HRD rookie)
Height 5'4"
Occupation Former Entomologist, professional dreamer, world traveler
How did you get into derby? My friend Donkey Punch introduced me to the sport. When I was relocating, I decided that wherever I decided to ultimately move - they had to have a roller derby league.
How did you pick your derby name? I've got several layers to me. Also, I love It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Likes travel, food, sunshine, laughing, hiking, maple syrup, live music
Dislikes negativity, being on top of a mountain during a lightning storm, and rattlesnakes - though I'm trying to make peace with the little beasts!
Favorite thing about derby The socks (Just kidding). I like meeting all the unique people, skating, and I like hearing my name being called out from the crowd.
Fun Facts Causing trouble is fun.

Tune in next Monday to see our next set of featured skaters for the week!

Thank you to all of our fans who came out to our bout Saturday, July 21!

(By the way ...mud volleyball is really fun). I was looking for something to join when I saw an article in the paper on roller derby. I didn't even finish reading the article when I realized this was exactly what I had been looking for. I went to my first practice and loved it. Now I am surrounded by a group of women who I can relate to....yeah!
How did you choose your derby name? My mom and dad were hippies and had to give me one of those unusual names... Amity -it really is in a baby name book. So I wanted to use it some how in my derby name... a fellow derby girl came up with it... thanks to Teetotaler!
Likes I love the outdoors, hiking , camping ( in an RV ) , photography, cupcakes, trying new foods, laughing till it hurts, tornados and spontaneous road trips.
Dislikes Slackers, muffin tops, spiders, roaches, greasy food, and bad drivers ..... I'm from Boston and we don't drive bad, we just know how to drive.
Favorite thing about derby I love playing the game , whether it's jamming or blocking. Pushing myself as hard as I can and being yelled at to do it better.
Fun Facts I have 4 kids. I love being a mom. But my kids call me Nazi Mom, not sure why... I'm so sweet. I am a huge animal and nature lover.  I would pull off the road just to look at a bird in a tree.

Name Betty Watchett
Number 19
Team Bayou City Bosses, Houston All-Stars
Position Pivot, Blocker, Jammer
Years Played 2 years
Height 5'4"
Occupation Administrative Assistant for a Medical Insurance Broker / Full Time Student / Editor-In-Chief of University Newspaper.
How did you get into derby? I don’t really remember how I decided to do derby – I literally woke up one morning and told myself I was going to do it. I looked up derby online and saw that HRD had a rec league and started going. 8 weeks later, I tried out for HRD and a few months after that I was drafted. I lived down the street from a Roller Rink when I was younger and grew up as a rink rat. It wasn’t too long ago that I was skating on in-lines at birthday parties for fun and I’ve played sports all my life – naturally, derby has been the perfect fit for me.
How did you pick your derby name? I really wanted a name that sounded like a threat so after playing with a few words, I came up with my current name, Betty Watchett. Its connotation is supposed to derive from the phrase “better watch it.” A lot of people think it has something to do with Betty White –hehe.
Likes My cat, my family, my boyfriend, skating, food, photography, music, traveling, inspiring, writing, and having a good laugh.
Dislikes Bathing my cat, overly-self-centered people, unnecessary pessimism, bugs, being sick, bad days, and not having enough to do.
Favorite thing about derby Everything about it. Derby is one of the only sports I’ve been able to stick with and really fall in love with. It’s as much of a team sport as it is an individual one and it promotes self growth. It accepts people of all ages, sizes, cultures, and backgrounds. Roller Derby saved my soul and has given me all of the tools I've needed to become a strong, level-headed, confident woman.
Fun Facts I started skating with HRD when I was 18 and was drafted when I was 19 (my number). I just turned 21 this past April. People frequently tell me that I remind them of Ellen Page from Whip It (I still don’t see it). As a hobby I do a lot of photography for bands in the Houston Death Metal scene. I play World of Warcraft (*nerd). I rescued my cat before she was suppose to be put down this past January and she’s the most amazing, fluffy, friendly buddy ever.

How did you pick your derby name? My family and I tried to come up with a name for a few months but nothing really made sense or rolled off the tongue. Meet HRD Mondays!

It's Monday! That means it's the time of the week for YOU to meet the many faces of HRD and learn a little about the skaters you want to cheer for in 2012!

This Monday, check out Goddess of War and Mary Queen of Skates!

Name Goddess of War
Number 77 Hits
Team The Valkyries
Position Jammer, blocker, overall beast.
Years Played Rookie, just strapped on skates in July.
Height Roughly the same height as your mom.
Occupation Computer technician, professional gamer, and YouTube vlogger.
How did you get into derby? I watched RollerJam religiously on TNT back in '99. I was obsessed with this blade/quad chaos and swore that I would one day move to Cali (that's where it was performed) and be part of this. Eventually this derby hybrid ceased to exist and I went about my life. I was reintroduced to derby at Comicpalooza and promised when I could get work to allow the practice time, I would join. So here I am.
How did you pick your derby name? My derby name is an obvious one to those who game, but for those who lead the unfortunate lives of no gaming the origins come from a killer series "God of War". Kratos is the God of War (not Ares, Kratos killed Ares for the spot) and is my hero, real or not. I am the one and only female Goddess of War and am well known for the costume and body paint.
Likes Horror movies, PlayStation games, comics, Magic the Gathering, costume making, nerdy conventions, high scores, platinum trophies.
Dislikes  Server lag while trying to play online games.
Favorite thing about derby I love the physical aspect of it. It's so challenging, yet so rewarding. I also adore the fact that after hitting someone so hard you hear their spine crack, they get up and high five you.
Fun Facts I was on the PlayStation Network's The Tester Season 2, and am currently running to be Maxim's Gamer Girl!

Name Mary Queen of Skates
Number 1542 AD
Team Bayou City Bosses, The Knockouts
Position Blocker, "wanna-be" pivot
Years Played 3rd season!
Height 5'6"
Occupation Subsea Oil and Gas Project Manager
How did you get into derby? My sister plays banked track derby in Austin. When I moved to Houston, I was looking for something that I could meet people through and that would also keep me from getting too fat.
Likes beer, wine, knitting, baking
Favorite thing about derby Meeting people of all different kinds. No matter what's happening in your life, good or bad, there is always someone on the league who has had a similar experience. I also love the shared goals and camaraderie that comes with training with, organizing, and hanging out with such a large and diverse group of ladies (and gents!).
Fun Facts I can put 10 dimes in my nostrils at the same time.

Tune in next Monday to see our next set of featured skaters for the week!

Thanks to all of our fantastic fans who came out to our bout this past Saturday!
The Knockouts and the All-Stars played two well-played, close games this weekend. Good job ladies!

Meet HRD Mondays!

It's Monday! That means it's the time of the week for YOU to meet the many faces of HRD and learn a little about the skaters you want to cheer for in 2012!

This Monday, check out Bleeda Ford and SyRenge!

Name ("Make'em") Bleeda Ford
Number 1031
Team Bayou City Bosses
Position All! Like a BO$$!!
Years Played This is my first competitive year with a Houston Roller Derby home team. Season opener was my full year being in skates.
Height I am 5'1 at least that is what my drivers' license says.
Occupation I am a part time student, part time sales associate at Victoria's Secret and a seasonal store manager for Halloween Express.
How did you get into derby? I got talked into going to a boot camp with a friend and fell in love. I immediately enjoyed the idea of being part of a team again. And knowing I had the opportunity to move up to a competitive level was the cheese to my macaroni.
How did you pick your derby name? As far as my derby name goes the quotation before my name doesn't fit so I normally leave it off. But the name itself came from my boyfriend. So, although I love Lita Ford, we wanted to go for something with a play on Joan Jett. But after watching The Runaways like 7 times "Make'em" Bleeda Ford is what came out. :)
Likes I LOVE MUSIC!! I am a huge fan of Joan Jett. I love finding new music or old music off pandora. Oh and I love Sprinkles cupcakes. I like to take photos and I like digital photography. Dexter is awsome! And I like sailor moon and comics.
Dislikes  Funny - I'm sure there are a lot things I really dislike but I can't think of anything at the moment. Except maybe traffic. I really hate traffic and who doesn't but it really irritates me.
Favorite thing about derby My favorite thing about derby is playing the game. I don't think I have ever felt this way about a sport I've played. I truly enjoy being in the game and playing to win.
Fun Facts I have a jacket problem. I will go out and buy jackets in the summer in the spring in the winter. I have a million and one coats. Also my favorite color is purple. And I am currently taking dance lessons to learn swing, tango and waltz.

Name SyRenge
Number 911
Team Psych Ward Sirens (Co Captain), The Knockouts
Position Jammer/Blocker
Years Played This is my second year as a skater for HRD
Height 5'6"
Occupation ICU Nurse
How did you get into derby? One of my good friends has been playing derby for a couple years and after watching her play I couldn't resist and I signed up and began training with the HRD Rec League.
How did you pick your derby name? When it came time to pick my name I wanted to make reference to my nursing career so in combination with my real name (Ren) you get SyRenge
Likes I like to knit and craft. I also like puppies (especially cute puppies).
Dislikes I'm not a big fan of snakes. Snakes just creep me out.
Favorite thing about derby I love the friends that I have made. It's crazy how you can get all these different girls together and we create this marvelous bond that will last far into the future.
Fun Facts I won 2011 HRD rookie of the year.

Tune in next Monday to see our next set of featured skaters for the week!
