HRD Helps Out At Houston Food Bank

Derby skaters love to eat, which is not really a surprise, since athletic women need to consume up to 2,400 calories a day to keep up with their active lifestyles. And for every skater on Houston Roller Derby who loves trying out the newest low-fat vegan recipe, there are still others who are known to get down on some chili cheese fries.

Whatever our diet, most of us are lucky enough to never have to worry about our pantry shelves going empty. That's why we were honored to volunteer for those in our community who don't get to have that peace of mind. A group of 24 HRD members and volunteers headed to the Houston Food Bank on Saturday to help the bank in their mission to feed the city's food insecure.

We learned about how one local straight-A high school student purposefully flunked her classes so she could go to summer school -- just so she could eat. We learned how the bank provides up to 64,000 meals each year to families in the Houston area. And we learned a little about the hard work it takes to provide that much assistance to the community.

HRD is proud to be a part of the Houston community, and as a 501c3 non-profit organization we are always on the lookout for ways to give back. Thanks to Houston Food Bank for showing us the ropes and letting us lend a helping hand. Visit www.houstonfoodbank.org to volunteer or find out how they can help you.

HRD All Stars Launch Indiegogo Campaign

The Houston Roller Derby All-Stars are Houston’s dream team - the league’s most talented and dedicated skaters cherry-picked out of its four home teams. These women train a minimum of three times a week and have played against numerous cities across the U.S. since 2006. They are currently ranked 28th worldwide by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).

Houston Roller Derby is gearing up for a truly amazing All-Star season this year, but we need your support.
We are training like never before, and with our hard work and your support we will have the opportunity to represent Houston in one of the WFTDA Division One Tournaments this September!

A successful season requires a considerable amount of time, effort, and of course, money.  It takes a lot of Benjamins to send our All-Star skaters all over the nation to represent the 4th largest city in the US. All of this means that we need to raise $$$ and we’re asking for your donations so our skaters can focus on their training.
Our All-Stars are comprised of TWENTY amazing skaters, and here’s a little idea of how much money it takes just ONE skater to travel for an away game:

--$75+ to buy her a roller derby helmet.
--$120+ to outfit her in our pink and black All-Star uniforms.
--$500 per trip to send her to play out of state.
Not to mention every skater has to have the requisite skates, wheels, bearings, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guards and more, all of which can add up to over $700 per skater!
  • Donate ANY amount and you get our undying love and support for all time!
  • Donate $25 and you get two HRD stickers and a koozie!
  • Donate $50 and you get all rewards of previous levels + and an autographed All Star photo!
  • Donate $100 and you get all rewards of previous levels + limited edition All-Star t-shirt!
  • Donate $250 and you get all rewards of previous levels + invite to special happy hour with the whole team upon return from the East Coast Derby Extravaganza (ECDX) held in Feasterville, PA June 28-30, 2013!
  • Donate $500 and you get all rewards of previous levels + a pair of VIP tickets to the bout of your choice!

ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING you contribute helps us get one step closer to domination!  We sincerely appreciate all of your continued support and love!

Next Beginner Boot Camp Starts Tuesday, April 2!

Get ready to sweat!Boot camp is where you go to get strong, get fit, and get ready to play with the best.
If you are new to derby and want to try things out to see if the sport is really for you, try out our recreational league - this is the avenue many of our skaters take before trying-out for our competitive bouting teams. Here, you will be put in a beginner boot camp with other skaters who are new to the sport. We will teach you everything you need to know: how to skate, how to properly fall, and stop! Our boot camps are taught through our Machete Bettie Rec League
Our members vary in age and athletic ability. Women attend Rec League for different reasons. Many women attend to learn the skills in preparation for future HRD home team skater try outs, and others just for a great workout.
All skaters must be 18 years or older.
Boot Camp Goals:
  1. Teach the game of flat track roller derby: skills, rules, strategies and referee signals.
  2. Prepare those interested in trying out for HRD’s competitive home teams.
  3. Give tips for healthy living and taking good care of your body.
  4. Get a good workout.
  5. Build relations with fellow skaters.
  6. Have fun.
Training:
We have three levels of training. All skaters start off in the beginner group and will have to pass assessments before being allowed to move to the next group.
Beginner Boot Camp (L1)
  • cost $100
  • Sessions length- 6 weeks
  • When- Tuesday Nights @ 7:00pm-9:00pm.
First Session will start at 6:30pm to have time to fill out paperwork.
  • Where- Houston Indoor Sports- 221 Barren Springs Dr. Suite 15, Houston, TX 77090
  • All NEW skaters must go through Day 1 of beginner boot camp - skilled skaters could be promoted to Intermediate at their first class
Session 3: April 2 - May 7, 2013
