Meet HRD Mondays!

It's Monday! That means it's the time of the week for YOU to meet the many faces of HRD and learn a little about the skaters you want to cheer for in 2012!

This Monday, check out Flyon Maiden and Loco Meaux Tion!

Name Flyon Maiden
Number 666
Team The Brawlers (Captain), HRD All-Stars
Position jammer, blocker, wiggler
Years Played 4 years
Height 5'6"
Occupation Contractor in the world of live event production.
How did you get into derby? My then and now derby wife, Bloody Bathory, found me at a poetry slam... then found me in an anthropology lecture of 300+ people... and pretty much stalked me until I agreed to pursue roller derby.
How did you pick your derby name? I was denied my first name, Paralizya Minelli, and zoned out for hours when FLYON MAIDEN popped in my head. It's like Iron Maiden... but faster, and can kick Bruce Dickenson's ass!
Likes I LOVE onezies... rock n roll, things that remind me of Pee-Wee's Playhouse, cartoons, skating, and going FAST!!!
Dislikes Burglars, sour milk, people that cannot accept derby into their heart.
Favorite thing about derby I have never felt so passionate about anything in my life. I have found my "thing," and that thing is an alternative sport full of spunk, braaaaaiinnss, and athleticism. It's like a wild, blobular ever-growing monster (a nice monster, with a cool hat) and I am one of its countless blobs that morphs and adapts to keep the beast alive, thus giving me purpose and a continuous quest for improvement... and friends..lots of friends.
Fun Facts I began my derby career with Northwest Arkansas Roller Derby in Fayetteville while attending college. I transferred to Houston Roller Derby a month after graduating in 2010. Also... Praise "BOB"!

Name Loco Meaux Tion
Number 555
Team The Valkyries
Position Blocker
Years Played Rookie Season!
Height 5'5"
Occupation Grant Writer
How did you get into derby? Derby is a family affair. We went to a game for my brother’s birthday and we were immediately hooked. He signed up to be a ref and I joined our recreation league, the Machete Betties.
How did you pick your derby name? The origin of my skater name is a combination of wanting to incorporate my real name, and a secret nod to the ghost train in Ghostbusters II. The Ghostbusters franchise is a favourite of the Comeaux siblings. Who ya gonna call? 555-2368!
Likes/Dislikes Long walks on the beach and mean people? You’re not going to ask me to take my clothes off for some sort of tasteful pictorial session, right?
Favorite thing about derby Derby is good people!
Fun Facts I think I revealed too much already in committing my Ghostbusters obsession to the world wide web, but thanks for asking.

Tune in next Monday to see our next set of featured skaters for the week!

How did you pick your derby name? When selecting my derby name I wanted something witty and clever.
Likes Dachshunds, miniature items, wine (not miniature kind), reading, and moose hunting.
Dislikes Never finding a moose. Low Five's and licorice.
Favorite thing about derby Everyone involved works to make this sport successful. The DIY movement has really liberated women who participate in many fashions. We are building, creating, and making this sport happen without experts or suits (management).

How did you get into derby? My son took me to go see Derby up in Washington state where he lived. I fell in love all over again. I remember it on TV when I was young and wanted to go up to play derby but then it when away.
How did you pick your derby name? I had a contest with all my friends to help me pick a name but didn't ever come up with one until I was watching Monk on TV with hubby and they had a serial killer who took his victims lipstick tubes as trophys. They needed a name to call him so they came up with Lipstick Assassin. My husband and I looked at each other and at the same time said "That's it, that's my name". Called my son asked him what he thought and he loved it too. So the rest is history.
Likes I like to outdoor skate while hubby rides the bike with our two dogs, sew clothes, watch a good movie at night in bed, ballroom dance with hubby in the empty dining room, gorging on a large bag of popcorn and not sharing it.
Dislikes Getting up early on the weekends, Lima Beans, flavored coffee in the morning, playing the same songs on the radio over and over and over again.
Favorite thing about derby My favorite thing about derby is the connection with all these wonderful women. Secondly, I really like the fact that you can get all your aggression out on the track and then go have a beer with everyone. It also keeps me in great shape so that people have a hard time telling how old I am.
Fun Facts I am the oldest HRD skater ever! I am also a mom of a 31 and a 27 year old. I was in the US Navy for 4 years active duty. I have been married to Mr. Stick for 17 years. I had a Great Planes rat snake for a pet for 14 years.

Derby teaches you that your body / size / shape / weight has purpose and is to be appreciated in whatever its format.

Meet HRD Mondays!

It's Monday! That means it's the time of the week for YOU to meet the many faces of HRD and learn a little about the skaters you want to cheer for in 2012!

This Monday, check out Shocker Zulu, Dirty Diana and The Prosecutor!

Name Shocker Zulu
Number 2-1
Team Bayou City Bosses, The Knockouts
Position Blocker
Years Played This will be my second season with HRD
Height In heels 5'7"
How did you get into derby? I used to watch that awesomely cheesy show Rock and Roller Games in the 80's and I wanted to be one of those derby players so bad! So when I saw the commercial for Whip It and saw derby was back (and REAL) I Googled roller derby and up popped HRD!
How did you pick your derby name? I wanted to have a female warrior's name, in particular someone from Africa. I couldn't find any females so I chose Shaka Zulu the most badass African warrior ever.
Likes I like shiny things. I love shoes - especially high heels. Apple pie is my favorite dessert. Love disco and 80's music, WWE wrestling, St. Louis Cardinals, musicals, and cheesy dance movies. Yay, Footloose!
Dislikes I don't like pecans or birds. Pecans taste gross and birds just are gross. Narrow-minded people, ugly "serviceable" shoes, math or the color orange. Love romance novels, but generally despise romantic comedies. Go figure.
Favorite thing about derby Being with my teammates! We have fun when we're at practice or hanging out together. I love that feeling of coming off the track after a jam and knowing that my pack did our job against the other team. And I really enjoy thinking about what goes into playing the sport - makes my mind work!
Fun Facts Including steps and half-siblings, I have 24 brothers and sisters. I lived most of my life in St. Louis, but I've never been up in the Gateway Arch. I'm distantly related to Rock and Roll legend, Chuck Berry.

Name Dirty Diana
Number 213
Team The Valkyries
Position Likely Jammer
Years Played .1 (Rookie)
Height 5'0"
Occupation Until recently, Tour Manager/ Mobile Marketing - Don't know now... had to quit to play Derby. Too much travel.
How did you get into derby? I was a street skater for over a decade in L.A. I just missed out on old style sensational Derby which I might have played if I was a few years older. When I moved to Houston my husband saw the rec league advertised and thought it might be a good match for me since he had heard me talk so much about how much I loved skating on quads, and how I never quite came to terms with the whole rollerblades business. I started with rec in the early days when there were only about 7 of us skating around without a lot of direction.
How did you pick your derby name? I was having a hard time coming up with one in Rec. Our speed coach just took to calling me "Derby Diana." I couldn't abide the Derby part... it seemed awkward to have Derby in my name so I went with Dirty Diana. I had every intention of coming up with something else "officially," but it grew on me. Also, that song is from my era so it fits in that way too.
Likes I really like good beer and IPA's in particular. Also, cake.
Dislikes I know better than to divulge to the Derby community what I don't like. Otherwise, whatever it is, I'll be subjected to it all the time!
Favorite thing about derby Right now, it's the opportunity to push myself hard to improve. The league and team practices are so well coached and I am getting so much out of them. There's really nowhere to go but up since I am brand new and need to learn, well, everything. Hopefully in a few months time this answer will be more interesting.
Fun Facts I used to sell candy to the Hillside Strangler.

Name The Prosecutor
Number 35
Team The Brawlers, The Houston All-Stars
Position Blocker
Years Played 7 years (Since 2005)
Height 5'10"
Occupation Attorney
How did you get into derby? I am one of the founding members of the league
who went to my first practice on January 23, 2005.
Once someone explained that we were full contact on skates, I was hooked.
How did you pick your derby name? My derby name came from my legal side with my job.
Favorite thing about derby It is a great female sport! I love the camaraderie, competition and friendship.
Fun Facts I am not actually a prosecutor.
I am a civil trial attorney in private
practice.

Tune in next Monday to see our next set of featured skaters for the week!

Meet HRD Mondays!

Every Monday, we'll be featuring a few of our skaters on our blog!
Meet the many faces of HRD and learn a little about who you want to cheer for in 2012!

This Monday, check out Wicked Sweet, TieDie PiXie and Freight Train!

Name Wicked Sweet
Number 30
Team The Valkyries
Position Jammer / Blocker
Years Played This is my 3rd season. I started with the rec league in June 2009.
Height 5'10"
How did you get into derby? I moved to Houston in 2009 and was bored for a few months before my new job started, so I came to a rec league practice to kill time and make friends.
How did you pick your derby name? I had just moved from Boston, and I chose Wicked Sweet as an homage to the couple of years that I spent in Beantown.
Likes Spiral sliced ham and Ron Swanson
Dislikes Flight delays and the movie Captain America
Favorite thing about derby Power jams
Fun Facts A few months ago, in an introspective reverie brought on by a particularly tasty lunch, I realized that I ate approximately 960 tuna fish sandwiches during elementary school.

Name TieDie PiXie
Number 82
Team Psych Ward Sirens
Position Anywhere they put me!
Years Played 1.5 (Rookie)
Height 5'4 off skates (that would make me model height on skates... right?)
Occupation Technical Associate for AT&T
How did you get into derby? I saw ONE game in the 2010 season and was hooked, but since I had just got my teeth fixed I was scared to join. A rec leaguer told me get a good mouth guard and to just go for it.... so I did and I joined rec.
How did you pick your derby name? I was so undecided on a name that I had an excel spreadsheet of possibilities. I just had to include "tie-dye" somewhere, (duh! my car is tie-dye!) plus I like fairies and stuff like that, and the word Pixie is a fun word.
Likes I love bright colored clothes, tie-dye or not. I like sweets.
Dislikes I hate it when people drive slowly in the left lane. Or just drive stupid in general.
Favorite thing about derby I'm still so new, and learning so much, I haven't pin-pointed just one favorite thing... so for right now, I'm going to say EVERYTHING!
Fun Facts I got into a fist fight in the median of a highway after a guy with a serious case of road rage clipped my car on purpose. I'm pretty sure I won.

Name Freight Train
Number CH00
Team The Brawlers, The Houston All-Stars
Position Jammer/Blocker
Years Played 1
Height 5'4"
Occupation Student at the University of Houston
How did you get into derby? I was introduced to roller derby by my dad, who was introduced by Mr. John McKay at Montrose Skate Shop. My dad was there to get his skates fixed and Mr. John told him about it and gave him a flyer. My dad gave me the flyer so I could check it out, but it wasn't until a year later when I was reminded by him again and joined derby.
How did you pick your derby name? Initially, I had a hard time choosing one because I just got used to people calling me "Tinisha" (my real name) in rec league. It wasn't until the first time I scrimmaged with HRD I was given the name "Freight Train." I was given this name by a skater I accidentally back blocked while I was jamming. The amount of force behind the hit knocked her down hard. I didn't really have a skater name then and I had overheard "If she doesn't have a name yet, I am just going to call her Freight Train!" I thought it was great.
Likes I enjoy dancing while roller skating, homework, hamburger pizza, and anything made with peanut butter.
Dislikes I don't have any dislikes at the moment.
Favorite thing about derby My favorite thing about derby is skating. I have strong love for things that involve skates.
Fun Facts I've been jam/dance skating for all my life mostly at Almeda Skating Rink. We used to go to the skating rink at least once a week for about 8 hours. The longest I've ever skated in one sitting is 12 hours. Sometimes people think I am dancing off beat until they find out I am using a MP3 player. I love being my own DJ. But when my favorite songs come on at the rink, I gladly dance different shuffles with the other skaters.

Tune in next Monday to see our next set of featured skaters for the week!
Don't forget to get your tickets to our season opener bout March 17 - it’s a little less than a month away! Meet HRD Mondays!

Every Monday, we'll be featuring a few of our skaters on our blog!
Meet the many faces of HRD and learn a little about who you want to cheer for in 2012!

This Monday, check out Louisa May Assault, Global Warman, and Becky Booty!

Name Louisa May Assault
Number 27
Team The Brawlers, The Knockouts
Position Jammer / Blocker
Years Played I started with the Rec League in the spring of 2010 and tried out for the league that fall. I found my home with the Brawlers before the season started in 2011. It feels like forever and just last week at the same time!
Height 5'5"
Occupation Graphic Designer
How did you get into derby? I was a crash-zone fan until 2xForce and I decided to try it ourselves, which was the best plan ever.
How did you pick your derby name? Picking a derby name was pretty difficult for me; it took weeks of lists and consulting people. Eventually, I chose a favorite author and twisted it.
Likes I love my adorable mutt who I rescued from Houston SPCA six years ago. She's just the sweetest, most ridiculous dog ever.
Dislikes I hate olives and days without derby.
Favorite thing about derby Skating! It's so much more fun than getting around without wheels strapped to your feet. Of course, getting out all my frustrations on the track is a great bonus.
Fun Facts I'm making an honest man out of Mr. Assault this June!

Name Global Warman
Number 212
Team The Valkyries
Position Jammer / Blocker
Years Played Years Played-.01 / Years on Rec League-2 yrs
Height 5'7"
Occupation Restaurant Supply Sales
How did you get into derby? I got that 20 year High School Reunion invitation and realized I STILL hadn't found and adult hobby.
How did you pick your derby name? My last name is Warman and Warman Fuzzy wasn't very threatening.
Likes Meat and potatoes, sleep, cruddy old sitcoms.
Dislikes Running(even for my life), people who don't use their blinker, unwarranted arrogance.
Favorite thing about derby Getting to know myself in a whole new way, as a whole new person since I used to be a MAJOR couch potato.
Fun Facts I wear a pedometer pretty much every waking minute. I broke my ankle the first day I bought my own speed skates.

Name Becky Booty
Number 866
Team The Bayou City Bosses, The Houston All-Stars
Position Pivot/Blocker (Hoping to be Jamming this season again, I frequently jammed season one)
Years Played 7
Height 5'5"
Occupation Mother, artist, dental assistant
How did you get into derby? I wanted to play since I was 7-years-old and I saw it on TV. I have skated basically all my life. I was a Figure/Freestyle competitive skater when I was 12-14. When I moved to Texas I started skating with the Urban Animals and the In-Line Swine. I skated with them for about 10 years before hearing of this Derby League being formed in Houston, while out on a street skate. I attended the next practice.
How did you pick your derby name? My derby name was created by two boys who worked at the rink who were there when it was closed to the general public. They would frequently watch me practice and they started calling me "Becky Booty," so I figured that would be a fitting name for me. My number was my bicycle courier number when I worked for City Couriers.
Likes I like being blessed by The Holy Spirit! Like skating and the color pink, doing all types of art, working out, yoga, hanging out with my family and good friends, snow skiing, water skiing, my new house in the Heights, carpooling, I could go on and on... I am so very blessed!
Dislikes Dishonesty and manipulating, getting injured and not being able to skate, mean spiteful people, a dirty messy home.
Favorite thing about derby Great friends that I wouldn't have otherwise, helping others, being a positive role model. Having to always aspire to get better, pushing my body harder all the time. I love that it is a Smart Person Game, must be able to multi task and have super awareness under extreme pressure. Must work with teammates, even if you don't necessarily get along off the track, must overcome for the common goal - winning!
Fun Facts I was drafted to one of our first teams, The Burlesque Brawlers, now known as just "The Brawlers." We used to "Fake Fight." That was something we had to learn how to do it safely as to not hurt someone, at the same time trying to make it look "real" getting the crowd all excited! We used to be allowed to launch someone 3 rows into the crowd and it was not a penalty. That was FUN! Seeing that I was originally one of maybe 5 out of at least 60 that could really skate (when the league started in 2005), the five of us began teaching the others; myself, using the techniques that were used in my youth: how to stand without falling, doing crossovers, eventually how to turn around then do a toe stop etc. Some of these girls turned out to be amazing skaters and pivotal members of HRD! They are some you may know today, DBC, Carmen Geddit, and The Prosecutor.

Tune in next Monday to see our next set of featured skaters for the week!

Years Played 2 years banked, but this will be my rookie season on flat track
Height 5'2"
Occupation Accountant
How did you get into derby? A friend was trying out for a league, and after attending her first game, I knew I had to join. So I went to boot camps, ended up joining the league, and haven’t looked back.
How did you pick your derby name? I started off my career as a tax accountant with a focus on partnership tax. Section 751(b) of the Internal Revenue Code defines a specific type of asset with a particular tax treatment in the event of a partnership liquidation. Nickname for this group of assets: hot assets. So I might be a little bit of a nerd.
Likes Spreadsheets, data analysis, chocolate, adventure races (Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, etc.), chocolate.
Dislikes Mud, snakes, boredom, sunburns.
Favorite thing about derby It’s the first sport that I've found that I have actually stuck with long enough to see improvements to keep me interested. And it’s given me a great source of camaraderie and friendship. And bruises. Lots of bruises.

Name Bloody Hell
Number 4311
Team The Bayou City Bosses, The Knockouts
Position Jammer / Blocker
Years Played 2
Height 5'6"
Occupation Safety Coordinator
How did you get into derby? My friend at work asked if I would like to go see a game, loved it and talked to one of the Betties and they told us to come out on Tuesdays to Rec League and so I did and the rest is history...as they say.
How did you pick your derby name? I actually did not come up with my derby name , my office took a vote when they found out I had to pick a name and Bloody Hell received the most votes.

Favorite thing about derby the huge circle of friends that I have made, being part of a fantastic team and the adrenaline rush!
Fun Facts Believe it or not I’m actually 1/4 Jamaican. I'm a huge Arsenal Fan. I was one of the first female Bicycle couriers in central London and at 17. I ran for Belgrave Harriers in London and qualified to run for England in the 800 meters.

Name Brand-Aid
Number 26
Team The Psych Ward Sirens (Captain), The Houston All-Stars
Position Jammer, Blocker, Pivot
Years Played 3
Height 5'8"
Occupation Project Manager
How did you get into derby? I grew up skating and first saw a flier while I was living in Austin for college. I wanted to get involved but was too much of a chicken. When I moved to Houston, I was skating with some friends at a local rink and an HRD skater told me I should try out. That was enough to push me to attend rec league a couple of times before try-outs the following month.
How did you pick your derby name? My skater name was actually given to me by my mom. As a kid I was constantly getting bumps, bruises and scrapes and any time I'd have so much as a tiny bruise I'd beg my mom for a band-aid. Since my name is actually Brandi, she decided I should be called Brand-Aid.
Likes I really enjoy music and movies. I have recently rediscovered my appreciation for running and if I had a boat, I'd be on my wakeboard every weekend.
Dislikes I absolutely HATE mayonnaise and milk.
Favorite thing about derby When I first moved to Houston, I only knew my family here so it is great to have an instant connection with so many people! I've made so many good friends in derby who will be my friends long after I've retired.
Fun Facts I like to stand on my head while in skates and I'm working on being able to do a real hand stand but so far have only attempted it in the grass.

Tune in next Monday to see our next set of featured skaters for the week!
Don't forget to get your tickets to our season opener bout March 17!
