Derby skaters love to eat, which is not really a surprise, since athletic women need to consume up to 2,400 calories a day to keep up with their active lifestyles. And for every skater on Houston Roller Derby who loves trying out the newest low-fat vegan recipe, there are still others who are known to get down on some chili cheese fries.
Whatever our diet, most of us are lucky enough to never have to worry about our pantry shelves going empty. That's why we were honored to volunteer for those in our community who don't get to have that peace of mind. A group of 24 HRD members and volunteers headed to the Houston Food Bank on Saturday to help the bank in their mission to feed the city's food insecure.
We learned about how one local straight-A high school student purposefully flunked her classes so she could go to summer school -- just so she could eat. We learned how the bank provides up to 64,000 meals each year to families in the Houston area. And we learned a little about the hard work it takes to provide that much assistance to the community.
HRD is proud to be a part of the Houston community, and as a 501c3 non-profit organization we are always on the lookout for ways to give back. Thanks to Houston Food Bank for showing us the ropes and letting us lend a helping hand. Visit www.houstonfoodbank.org to volunteer or find out how they can help you.
